The Selfish Lion #30
THE SELFISH LION
The mouse was afraid of the lion. He did not dare to peep out of his hole during the day. However, at night, when the lion was fast asleep, the mouse would come out of the hole and gnaw the lion's mane. One day, the lion came to know about the mouse's mischief. He decided to kill the mouse. But there was no way he could catch the mouse and kill him. The lion was always worried about the menace of the mouse. This affected his health.
The lion began to look pale and sick. His friend, the fox, could not bear to see him in this pitiable condition. He asked the lion, "Dear friend, what is worrying you to death?" The lion explained the whole matter to the fox.
The fox said, "You need not worry about this problem. The solution is very simple. Why don't you keep a cat? If there is a cat in the cave, the mouse will not dare to come out of his hole,"
The lion liked the fox's idea. He brought a cat to the cave. The cat was very smart. He knew that the hon would treat him well only as long as he needed him. So the cat would drive the mouse away, but he never tried to kill him.
Now the fox became jealous of the royal treatment given to the cat. One day, the cunning fox took the opportunity to turn the lion against the cat. He said, "Dear lion! This cat can certainly drive the mouse away, but he is not able to catch him and kill him! If he does not kill this one little mouse, soon there will be a large number of mice in this cave."
The lion asked the cat, "Why don't you kill the mouse? Can't you kill a small mouse?"
The cat was hurt by the lion's words. That night, as soon as the mouse came out of the hole, the cat pounced on him and killed him.
The lion was pleased with the cat. He told the fox about the death of the mouse. The cunning fox said, "It is good that the cat has finally killed the mouse. Since the mouse is dead, you no longer need the services of this cat."
The lion agreed with the fox. He said, "You are right, my friend. I had brought the cat to kill the mouse. Since the mouse is dead, I no longer need him now."
Thereafter, the selfish lion threw the cat out of the cave.
