The Wise Crane #46

THE WISE CRANE

bedtime story
There was a neem tree on the bank of a river. A flock of cranes lived in the tree. A poisonous snake lived in a hole under the tree. When the snake was hungry, he would crawl up the neem tree and swallow one of the cranes.

One day, all the cranes assembled to discuss the menace of the snake. They thought, "This snake eats up one crane every day. If this continues for a long time, the entire species of the cranes will become extinct."

A wise crane said, "We should find a solution to this problem. I have an idea. Let us invite the mongoose. He is an arch enemy of the snake. The mongoose will certainly kill the snake."

All the cranes liked the wise crane's idea. One of them said, "But we do not know where the mongoose lives. Who will go to invite him? And suppose he tries to kill us! What should we do then?"

The wise crane said, "The mongoose lives under the tamarind tree in a nearby field. There is no need to send him an invitation, but I have a task for all of you. Tonight, you will catch as many fish as you can. We will then lay all the fish in a line, right from the snake's hole to the mongoose's hole. The mongoose will eat all the fish. Thus, he will reach the hole of the snake on his own."

The cranes readily accepted the wise crane's suggestion. The next morning, before sunrise, the cranes collected many fish and laid them in a line from the snake's hole to the mongoose's hole. In the morning, when the mongoose woke up, he smelt the fish. He came out of his hole and saw the line of fish. He started eating the fish and soon reached the hole of the snake. Meanwhile, the snake also smelt the fish and he came out of the hole.

The snake and the mongoose came face to face. There was a terrible fight between the two enemies. At last, the mongoose killed the snake.

The cranes were happy and relieved. They lived in peace ever after.
