The Flying Tortoise #43

THE FLYING TORTOISE

bedtime story

A tortoise lived in a small lake in a forest.

One day, two swans came flying to the lake. They were

attracted by the lovely lake and the beautiful surroundings.

So, they decided to stay there. Soon, the tortoise and the

swans became the best of friends. The three enjoyed one

another's company.

Soon, the summer set in. The water in the lake began to dry

up. The swans said, "Dear tortoise! We cannot bear this

scorching heat and so we have decided to return home."

The tortoise wondered, "What will do without the swans?

Where will I go when all the water in this lake dries up? I

cannot even fly to another place. The tortoise discussed his

problems with the swans.

The swans decided to take the tortoise along with them.

They had an idea. They brought a long stick and said to the

tortoise, "We will put each end of this stick in our beaks. You

will have to hold on to the middle of the stick with your

mouth. But you must never open your mouth while we are

flying, or else you will fall down."

The tortoise readily agreed.

The swans then started flying high up in the sky with the

tortoise dangling from the stick. The tortoise had never been

so high up in the air before. He enjoyed watching the fields,

the lakes, the rivers and the mountains from a great height.

After some time, the swans approached a village. The people

of the village gathered to see the strange sight of the flying

swans and the tortoise dangling from the stick. They started

shouting, "Hey look! A flying tortoise!" The tortoise was thrilled

to see so many people looking at him. He said to himself, "Oh!

I must tell these people not to keep themselves to the earth. I

will ask them to fly with me and see how wonderful the earth

looks from the high sky."

The tortoise was so excited that he opened his mouth to say

something. Alas! He lost his grip on the stick, fell down on the

earth and died.
