The Greedy Fox #44

THE GREEDY FOX

bedtime story

There was a big meadow on the outskirts of a village. Every day, shepherds and cowherds came there to graze their goats, sheep and cattle. While the animals grazed, the shepherds and the cowherds would play under a banyan tree. They carried their meals and kept them in a hollow of the tree. The hollow had a narrow opening, but it was quite wide from the inside. Every afternoon, the shepherds and the cowherds would sit in the shade of the tree and have their lunch.

One day, a fox came to the meadow. He was very hungry. When he came near the banyan tree, he could smell the food kept in the hollow. The hungry fox entered the hollow and started eating the food placed there by the shepherds and the cowherds. He went on eating and soon finished all the food. He did not bother to think that it would be unwise to stuff so much food into his small stomach. After the heavy meal, the fox had a bloated stomach.

Now, the fox wanted to come out of the hollow. He wanted to run away before the shepherds and the cowherds could catch him. He put his head out of the hollow. But because of his bloated stomach, he could not get out of the narrow opening of the hollow. The fox struggled a lot, but it was all in vain. He was stuck at the mouth of the hollow.

Meanwhile, it was lunch time for the shepherds and the cowherds. They came near the banyan tree to get their lunch. But they were shocked to see that the fox had eaten up all their food. The furious shepherds and the cowherds beat the fox severely with their sticks They caught his neck and pulled him out of the hollow.

Poor fox! He was half-dead. He had no strength to walk even a step further. He collapsed near the hollow.

Thus, the foolish fox was punished for his greed.
