The Wolf and The Dog #35

THE WOLF AND THE DOG

bedtime story

There lived a wolf and a dog in a forest. They were the best of friends. One day, some servants of the King came to the forest. They saw the dog and were attracted by his bright, sparkling eyes. They liked him very much. So they caught him and took him to the palace. The dog was looked after very well by the servants. They cleaned him, bathed him and gave him good food. The dog began to enjoy his life in the palace. The servants put a lovely strap round his neck. It had small bells on it. They also got him a nice chain. The dog was allowed to roam around and guard the palace at night. However, he was always chained during the day.

After a few days, the dog remembered his friend, the wolf. As soon as he got an opportunity. he went into the forest to meet him. The two friends became very happy. The dog was now healthy and strong because he got good food to eat and he was well looked after. But the wolf looked weak because, at times, he could not find a prey and had to go hungry.

The dog said, "Dear wolf, come with me to the palace. You do not have to work there, and yet you will get very good food to eat. There are many servants to look after us."

The wolf readily agreed to go with the dog Suddenly, he noticed that a strap was tied round the dog's neck. The strap had hurt the skin around the dog's neck. So the wolf said, "Friend, what has happened to your neck?"

The dog said, "Oh! Nothing serious. During the day, I am not allowed to roam about freely because the servants chain me. Sometimes I pull against the chain and hurt myself."

The wolf said to himself. "This dog is chained for the whole day. He is not free to roam about as he likes. This is nothing but slavery." Thinking thus, he said to the dog. "Dear friend, you may be safe and comfortable in the palace, but you have lost your freedom. I would rather starve, than eat rich food and be chained. I would never tolerate such slavery. I would never give up my freedom and become a slave for the sake of a few comforts and safety."

Saying this, the wolf left for his home in the forest.
