The Owl and The Lark #29

THE OWL AND THE LARK

bedtime story

A big, old banyan tree stood on the bank of a river. An owl and a lark had their nests on the same branch of the banyan tree. The lark came out of her nest only during the day and the owl came out only at night. But, being neighbours, they knew each other quite well.

Every evening, some boys from the village came to play on the river bank. They often played marbles under the banyan tree.

One day, the lark saw that her neighbour, the owl was preparing to leave his nest and go somewhere else. The lark was puzzled. "Why is the owl leaving this old tree?" she wondered.

So, the lark went to the owl and said, "Oh, dear owl, why are you leaving us and going away? Don't you like this neighbourhood?"

The owl said. "Well, dear lark, I like the neighbourhood. But the boys of the village do not like my language. They make a lot of noise while playing. So, I shout at them and ask them not to make noise. But they get angry and throw stones at me. I might get killed if a stone hits me!"

The lark was surprised. She said, "Dear ow!! I still do not understand why you are leaving this tree. Boys will always make noise while playing. It is possible that elsewhere too, other boys may not like your language. They, too, may throw stones at you. What will you do then?"

"Oh! What should do now? Dear lark, please help me decide. I am totally confused!" said the owl.

The lark said, "Dear owl! If you think the boys do not like your language, you should try to change your manner of speaking. But you should not leave your old house for a new one for such a silly reason. In my opinion, it would be better to win them over with sweet words."

The owl understood what the lark was trying to convey to him. He realized his mistake and he decided to stay on the same old banyan tree. Now, he spoke very gently and the boys started liking him. Every day, they brought the owl something to eat. They became good friends.
