The Foolish Fox #31

THE FOOLISH FOX

bedtime story

There flowed a small river through a thick forest. There was always plenty of water in it.

A tortoise lived with his friends in this river. Many a time, he would come out of the river and take a stroll on the bank.

One day, a fox came to the bank of the river. He was hungry. Though he had wandered for the whole day, he could not find any prey. He saw the tortoise and his friends walking slowly on the bank of the river. He tip-toed towards the tortoises, waiting for an opportunity to pounce on one of them.

Suddenly, he sneezed When the tortoises heard the sneeze, they turned around and saw the fox. All the friends of the tortoise hurried back into the river. Now the tortoise was left all alone on the bank of the river. He looked around and wondered why his friends had suddenly rushed back into the river. "What happened?" he said to himself.

Meanwhile, the fox pounced on the tortoise and caught him.

Now the fox began his struggle to eat the tortoise. But the clever tortoise pulled himself into his shell. The tortoise has a very hard shell. The fox tried his best to break the hard shell of the tortoise but he could not.

Suddenly, the tortoise had an idea. He said, "Dear fox, I have a hard shell which will not break so easily. So, I request you to put me back Into the river. When the shell is soaked in water for some time, it will become very soft. Then it will be easy for you to eat me up."

The fox believed the tortoise. So, he pushed him into the river. The tortoise swam to the middle of the river and called out to the fox. "Hey fox! No doubt you are clever, but remember, you are not the only one."

The hungry fox lost his prey. He repented his folly.
