The Donkey and The Fox #41
THE DONKEY AND THE FOX
Long, long ago, there lived a washerman. He had a donkey. The washerman would load dirty clothes on the donkey's back and take them to the river for washing. In the evening, when the clothes had dried, the washerman would again load them on the donkey's back and return home. During the day, the donkey roamed freely and grazed on the bank of the river. Even at night, the washerman let him wander in search of food. The washerman never bothered to feed the donkey properly.
One night, the donkey met a fox. Soon, they became good friends. Now every night they wandered together in search of food. One night, they entered a field. As the farmer was fast asleep, the donkey and the fox ate the vegetables growing in the field. The donkey's stomach was full. He was now in a very pleasant mood.
He said to the fox, "Dear friend, look at the lovely stars in the sky! How beautiful the atmosphere is! I feel like singing tonight."
The fox said. "Oh. please forget about singing. If the farmer wakes up, he will beat us to death."
But the donkey was adamant. He said, "Ah! Don't worry, my friend. Listen to my sweet voice." Saying this the donkey began to sing. The fox quietly crept out of the field.
The farmer was awakened by the braying of the donkey. He got up, took his stick and beat up the donkey severely. He then picked up a big stone and tied it round the donkey's neck. The stone was so heavy that the donkey's legs hurt and he could hardly walk. With great difficulty. he limped out of the field.
The fox came to the donkey and said, "Oh! How beautifully you sang! What a sweet voice you have, my friend! It seemed the farmer was delighted to hear your song. Therefore, he has awarded you the heavy medal which you are wearing round your neck."
