THE DONKEY IN A TIGER'S CLOTHING
One day, the washerman had an idea. He had a tiger-skin with him. He covered his donkey with this tiger-skin. That night, he left his donkey to graze in a nearby field.
The farmer, the owner of the field, came there to keep a watch that night. He saw a tiger in the field. The farmer was frightened. But he was a clever man. He kept his cool and started thinking. He said to himself, "Does a tiger ever come to a field to graze? This tiger has been grazing here for a very long time now. A tiger does not remain in one place for such a long time." Thinking thus, the farmer gathered courage and tip-toed into the field. He hid himself behind a tree and saw the face of the donkey beneath the tiger-skin. The truth dawned upon the clever farmer.
After a while, the farmer started to imitate the braying of a donkey.
When the washerman's donkey heard the braying, he also got into the mood and started braying loudly.
At once, the farmer took a stick and began to beat the donkey mercilessly. Poor donkey! He was half-dead.
Early next morning, the washerman came to the field in search of his donkey. He was shocked to see him lying there half-dead.
The washerman approached the farmer and apologized to him. The farmer said. "You cannot turn a donkey into a tiger by covering him with a tiger-skin. A donkey will always remain a donkey. He cannot but show his true colours. No animal can hide his true nature for long."
The washerman realized that he had done a great injustice to his donkey and he repented his mistake. He now began to treat his donkey well.
